MLB Season Preview: Yankees Edition

The 2009 campaign was a memorable one for the Bronx Bombers. They opened a brand new Yankee Stadium, they spent nearly half a billion dollars on three players, Alex Rodriguez admitted to taking steroids, had hip surgery, came back and dominated in playoffs (god that feels good to say). Oh yeah, and they won their 27th World Series.

Mini Series: Addicts? A look at the Player-Fan Relationship (Groupie Love)

One of the more desired perks coupled with sport celebrity is the conceivable copulation, void of conditions. Or in layman’s terms, Groupies. These “driven” ladies used to only scour the popular post-game player hang outs, leaving the athletes’ private lives away from the nightlife scene personal. But with the introduction of social websites, the “wooing” has transfigured in style. No longer are these women satisfied with leaving these encounters to fortunate happenstance. No, these lovely ladies flaunt their famed acquaintances so overtly, it would make Ricky Henderson blush.

Some seem to seek the attention of these athletes simply for attentions’ sake. From their perspective, it appears that the significance to them of a public figure taking the time to leave a message for them on their facebook or twtter, is great. It symbolizes recognition, a kind of recognition that was never feasibly attainable by the fanatical masses before the
introduction of these mediums.

It is equivalent to those rare moments when a player singles out specific fans in the crowd of a game; the ultimate role reversal. If you’ve ever been privy to those instances personally or as a spectator, when those held in reverence regard those whom revere, consider the excitement of the fan in those brief moments. The image is indelibly cast within the memory of that ever-willing participant.

If you consider that the aforementioned role swaps happen so infrequently and to too few of us, it makes sense why so many fans have flooded the web in hot pursuit of that 140-character manifestation of acknowledgement.

The rapaciousness doesn’t come without expense though. While these desired male athletes spend their cash in a doting effort of the opposite sex, those partaking women liquidate their dignity in an act of sexist appeasement. They accept the misogynistic culture of professional athletes unconditionally in exchange for the experience of player interaction.

Or it could be they are simply going along in an effort to ensure their underlying prerogatives and goals are reached. Yes folks, some of these women's intentions simply go beyond the attention of these millionaire men. Meet “Ms.RhondaRay”:

Then only two minutes later…

It appears Ms. Ray not only wanted to be the object of Zach’s affections, the adulating couturier also wanted to give him fashion advice. I wonder if this proposed advisement was in the name of their friendship or would her recommendations come at a cost?

In this case, I got to see first-hand the financial pitfalls that these players must navigate on what must be a daily basis. This was no revelation to me as i'm sure it isn't to you, but it's more a realization of how irritatingly pesky these overtures must become. Not all are lucky enough to consider these manipulative ploys just pesky, for some they are genuine problems. Consider that most NBA players go bankrupt five years after they laced up their shoes for the last time and all of these additional expenses from these clingers-ons' are the main cause.
